Pouches Take Over the Backbar as Cigarettes Lose Shelf Space

The wall behind the convenience-store counter — the "backbar," in trade language — is being rebuilt. New category data reported in early August 2026 shows oral nicotine claiming space that combustible packs long dominated, and at least one Midwestern chain has cut that display down to roughly four feet.

The numbers driving the redesign

Total smokeless tobacco dollar sales reached $13.0 billion for the 52 weeks ending March 22, 2026, up 13.1% year over year. Inside that total, the "spitless" subcategory — which includes modern oral nicotine pouches — surged 29.5% in dollar sales to $6.89 billion, taking a 52.9% share of the smokeless category. Pouches now outsell traditional smokeless products.

Modern oral nicotine now accounts for over 52% of the smokeless category.

The traditional side moved the other way. Chewing tobacco sales fell 13.3% over the three months ending March 22, with a 15% decline in the final month of that period. Margin explains the rest. Casey's General Stores reported its nicotine pouch business up 31% in its third quarter of fiscal 2026, and noted that nicotine alternatives carry more than double the margin rate of combustible packs.

When a smaller footprint generates more profit per foot, the reallocation is not a trend — it is arithmetic.

Why shelf space is the real battleground

Backbar space is the scarcest real estate in the store. It is limited, regulated, and visible to every customer at the register. For decades the layout was settled: cigarettes dominated the center, everything else fought for the edges.

That settlement is coming apart, and it changes the shopping experience in concrete ways. Fewer cigarette facings means less carton depth and fewer slow-moving styles kept in stock. More pouch facings, such as ZYN Black Cherry Nicotine Pouches, 5 Cans (3mg & 6mg), means more strengths and flavors on display — and more churn, as chains test new SKUs and drop the ones that do not turn.

Retailers are prioritizing high-margin pouch facings over traditional combustibles.

Manufacturers know this, which is why so much marketing spend is aimed at retailers rather than consumers. A company's quarterly results increasingly hinge on whether it won a display program, not just whether shoppers like the product. This shift is a major part of the 2026 mid-year regulatory reality check for the industry.

What it means for shoppers

  • Your usual cigarette style may get harder to find: Specialty tobacconists and online retailers typically carry deeper assortments of Filtered Cigars & Cigarette Cartons (10 Packs of 20) than a c-store with four feet of space.
  • Pouch selection will keep expanding: Expect more strengths and flavors, and expect some to disappear. If you find one you like, it is reasonable to stock up. Philip Morris opens $1.2 billion ZYN factory to help meet this rising demand.
  • Category growth is not a safety statement: Nicotine pouches are addictive, and sales data says nothing about health outcomes. Public health groups have raised sustained concerns, and a Swedish study finds mouth lesions in a high percentage of users.

The bottom line

The smokeless category crossed a real threshold: pouches now account for more than half of its dollar sales, while chewing tobacco declines by double digits and cigarettes surrender display space. The counter is being rearranged around margin and growth. For shoppers, that means a narrower combustible selection in the average convenience store and a deeper, faster-changing oral nicotine set beside it. Those looking for traditional alternatives can still find a wide variety of Cigarillos & Small Cigars or Tobacco Products & Smoking Accessories through specialized vendors.
