Imperial Brands Hits 2026 Targets, Announces £1.5 Billion Stock Buyback
Imperial Brands, the British parent company of U.S.-based ITG Brands—manufacturer of Backwoods, Dutch Masters, Phillies, Hav-A-Tampa, and Antonio y Cleopatra cigars—informed investors on October 8 that it will meet all financial targets for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2026.
The pre-close trading update also announced a £1.5 billion share buyback for the coming year, citing robust pricing and market-share gains in the United States as primary drivers. For the cigar category, the report signals long-term stability: the owner of five of the industry's most prominent mass-market brands remains profitable, opting to return cash to shareholders rather than implementing emergency cost-cutting measures.

The Financial Performance
Imperial reported that tobacco net revenue grew at a low-single-digit rate for the sixth consecutive year. Meanwhile, its next-generation products—including heated tobacco, vapes, and oral nicotine—saw double-digit growth with share gains across all three categories.
Key financial projections include:
- Group Adjusted Operating Profit: Expected to land within the 3% to 5% growth range.
- Adjusted Earnings Per Share: Forecasted to rise by a high-single-digit percentage.
- Free Cash Flow: Expected to exceed £2.2 billion.
While overall tobacco volumes declined by a low-single-digit percentage, the company successfully offset these losses through strategic price increases. Imperial has now returned approximately £13 billion to shareholders via dividends and buybacks since 2021, reducing its total share count by more than 21% since October 2022.
The Role of the U.S. Market
The update specifically credited "robust pricing and share gains in our target segments in US and Germany" for the tobacco portfolio's performance. In the United States, ITG Brands manages a diverse portfolio where cigar brands have been particularly active this year.
Backwoods has rotated through a series of limited editions, including the Broad Street Sweet city pack and Red Velvet, and its Irish Cream cigarillo won a convenience-store new-product award in September.
Looking ahead, Dutch Masters is preparing for a significant packaging refresh in January 2027. The leadership transition also remains a focus, with ITG installing new chief executive Paola Pocci on October 1.

Growth in Smoke-Free Alternatives
On the smoke-free side, Imperial highlighted its Zone pouches and the acquisition of Black Buffalo, a tobacco-free dip brand purchased for $150 million. These assets, along with the September acquisition of Swedish pouch manufacturer Helwit, are expected to drive continued growth in the oral nicotine sector.
Market Outlook and Caveats
Despite the positive financial headlines, challenges remain. Imperial’s business model relies heavily on raising prices faster than the rate of consumer attrition. The company also underwent a restructuring in August that included job reductions and the exit of the blu vape business in several international markets.
What This Means for Cigar Consumers
- Price Discipline: Imperial’s focus on pricing power suggests that pre-priced cigarillos for brands like Backwoods and Phillies will likely continue to see incremental increases.
- Brand Stability: The massive stock buyback indicates the company is not looking to sell off its core cigar assets.
- Innovation Pipeline: The success of rotating flavors and "city packs" means consumers can expect a steady stream of limited-edition releases.

Imperial Brands is concluding fiscal 2026 on schedule, with the U.S. market serving as a primary engine for growth. For adult consumers of Backwoods Honey or Dutch Masters Coronas, the takeaway is a stable parent company with every incentive to maintain its market-leading brands through consistent investment and premium pricing.
