Nicotine Gummies and 'Cocrystals': Chinese Patents Hint at the Future of Oral Nicotine
The nicotine pouch may not be the format's final form. Two patent filings surfaced by the trade outlet 2Firsts this month show China's tobacco-industry research labs experimenting with what comes next: a soft-candy-style oral nicotine product with adjustable release, and an entirely new crystalline form of nicotine designed to outlast today's nicotine salts.
Neither is a product you can buy today — but both are signals worth reading for those following the evolution of nicotine pouches and alternative delivery systems.

The "Soft Candy" Patent
The first filing, published in early August and reported by 2Firsts on August 6, comes from China Tobacco Hubei Industrial, a subsidiary of the state tobacco monopoly. It describes an oral nicotine product in soft-candy form — gelling agents, sweeteners, and pH regulators shaped into spheres, hearts, stars, or fruit shapes.
The innovation features a dual-layer structure whose inner and outer layers carry different nicotine and pH levels, letting the manufacturer tune how fast the nicotine releases. Users could further adjust delivery by holding, chewing, or sucking the piece.
The filing's stated rationale is comfort: pouches, it argues, cause oral irritation from prolonged contact, while dissolvable films dump their nicotine too fast. A gummy that meters its own release splits the difference.
The "Cocrystal" Patent
The second filing, reported August 13, is from a research institute of Shenzhen Huabao, one of China's major flavor-and-fragrance groups. It covers a nicotine–ascorbic acid cocrystal — a new solid crystalline structure combining nicotine with vitamin C, distinct from both freebase nicotine and the nicotine salts that power modern vapes and pouches.
The disclosed data explain the benefits: stability and control. In accelerated aging tests (three months at 40°C and 75% humidity), the cocrystal lost less than 6% of its nicotine, versus nearly 15% for freebase nicotine and about 7% for a common salt.

Dissolution testing showed a gentler onset — around 10% released at five minutes — building to over 99% within an hour: early delivery plus sustained release. The filing proposes applications across e-liquids, heated-tobacco sticks, and oral products including pouches.
Reading the Global Signals
The critical context: these are patent filings and technical proposals, not commercial products. China doesn't permit domestic nicotine-pouch sales — novel nicotine is tightly controlled by the state monopoly — so R&D like this is best read as intellectual-property positioning for a global market where oral nicotine is the industry's one reliably growing category.
The candy concept deserves its obvious caveat: fruit- and star-shaped nicotine "gummies" are a youth-appeal and accidental-ingestion concern, which is precisely why the FDA has moved against flavored nicotine gummies in the U.S. before. Nicotine is addictive in any format, and a product engineered to feel like candy would face the hardest possible regulatory road in most Western markets.
